Religion in the Palestinian-Israeli Conflict

Course for Spring 2010

Department of the Study of Religion, Aarhus University

Instructor: Gabriel Levy

The conflict between Israel and Palestine is quite relevant for understanding current geopolitics and, especially American, foreign policy. This course will examine the use and non-use of religion in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict from 1900 to the present day. We will examine the origins of Palestinian and Jewish forms of nationalism and trace the causes and consequences of the incorporation of religion into conflict. We will read primary texts about the origins of Marxism, Zionism, the PLO and the Hamas/Jihadist movement and secondary texts in the study of religion about the nexus between religion and politics. The course will be in English.
