More Recently Clark has presented some plausible arguments about the developmental emergence of extended cognition through its reliance on "material symbols". He argues that the extended environment provides essential inputs into the cognitive system requiring us to rethink the very notion of a cognitive system. A more complex name for this has elsewhere been called the "principle of extracortical organization of higher mental functions"
